Ghana national held at Mumbai airport with cocaine worth Rs 1 lakh
A Ghana national, identified as Akufo Nana, was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau at Mumbai Airport on Tuesday for allegedly trying to smuggle cocaine in India by hiding it in his belt.
The 36-year-old Afuko was travelling to Kolkata when, during the security check at the airport, officials found white powder stuffed in his belt. Following which, an explosive trace detector machine was used. It detected that the powder contained 23 per cent cocaine. When interrogated, Afuko was unable to give a satisfactory answer.
The matter was reported to the local police. After a thorough check, the police confirmed that the powder was pure cocaine, weighing about 20 grams. Police estimate its market value to be around Rs 1.2 lakh.
Later, the accused told the police that he received this consignment from Delhi and was going to hand it over to someone in Kolkata.
Following his arrest, the airport police registered a case under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act of 1985 against Afuko.
