Mumbai’s iconic CST officially renamed to ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus’

The name of Mumbai’s iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) was officially changed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus on Thursday.
However, a Central Railway notification said that the code initial of the station, used for booking tickets, will remain same. i.e CSTM.
CR has also asked the concerned authorities to make the necessary changes at their end to incorporate the name change. The century old station is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and serves as the headquarters of the Central Railways.
The name was changed after the Centre approved the recommendation, of adding ‘Maharaj’ to the station name, put forth by the Maharashtra Assembly in December last year.
Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena had demanded addition of ‘Maharaj’ in the name of the station and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA).
Incidentally, Victoria Terminus was also rechristened as the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus during the earlier Shiv Sena-BJP regime between 1995 and 1999.
Sena has even demanded the renaming of five other suburban railway stations – including Mumbai Central, Elphinstone Road, Currey Road, Sandhurst Road, and Charni Road – that still have colonial names.
The Centre in May had given its consent for renaming of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Elphinstone Road railway station. The state government wants to rename Elphinstone Road railway station to Prabhadevi railway station.
