FYJC 2018: 2nd merit list to be out tomorrow, July 19
The second merit list for First Year Junior College (FYJC) 2018 applicants will be announced at 11 am tomorrow, July 19 on the education department’s admission portal.
The list was earlier scheduled to be released on July 16. However, the declaration was postponed following an order by the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court.
Reason For Delay
Prasarak Mandali, which runs several educational institutions in the state, had filed a writ petition against allowing minority colleges to surrender their vacant quota seats in the middle of the admission process.
The body alleged that minority colleges were surrendering seats to attract applicants participating in the centralised admission process (CAP).
After hearing the matter, the bench of Justice ZA Haw and BP Dharmadhikari, in an order dated July 12, directed the respondents (State of Maharashtra) to continue allotment of general category students to non-minority institutes.
“We direct the respondents, the government of Maharashtra, to continue allotment of Central admission process students to non-minority institutes and after it is completed, the students if available shall be allotted to minority institutes against such surrendered seats as an interim measure.”
Earlier, minority colleges would finish their quota admission process before the start of the CAP and surrender the remaining seats to general category students.
To comply with the court order, the surrendered quota seats are being returned to colleges, who will be able to fill them with quota students till the last round. If the seats remain vacant even after that, they can be opened for unreserved students.
The office of the Deputy Director of Education (DyDE) pushed the release of the second merit list by three days to accommodate the effective change in the seat matrix.
Important Developments
Students should take note of the following developments to ensure they are up to speed.
# The court order does not have any impact on students who have already secured admissions in the first round or under quota.
# The delay in announcing the second merit list is expected to have a cascading effect on the timetable. Applicants are therefore advised to keep an eye out for the revised timetable.
# As per the earlier schedule, the date for confirming admission under the second round was from July 16-19. However, the dates will likely be pushed forward by 2-3 days. The final dates are expected to be announced tomorrow.
# Students who cancelled their admissions or wish to change their stream can do so after the third round.
# Students who have applied in the centralised round but also want to apply under quota now have the option to do so.
Meanwhile, nearly 50,000 students confirmed seats in the first round.
Since most top colleges had limited seats left after the declaration of the first merit list, the cut-off percentages are expected to drop marginally for top colleges in the second list.
