20-year-old mows down and kills pedestrian with his BMW in Malad, arrested
Bangur Nagar police arrested a 20-year-old for mowing down and killing a pedestrian with his BMW in Malad West on Monday.
The incident occurred around 4 pm when the accused, Siddharth Vijan, rammed his speeding BMW into a pedestrian on Dumping Road in Malad West. The accused, who was accompanied by three women, was on his way home when the accident happened.
Following the incident, Siddharth tried to flee the spot. But onlookers gathered around his car, forced him to come out and thrashed him before handing him over to the police.
After he was taken into custody, a preliminary test was performed to check if he was driving under the influence of alcohol. Since the tests were negative, a case of rash, negligent driving and murder not amounting to culpable homicide was registered against the accused.
The injured passenger was rushed to a public hospital by onlookers, but was declared dead on arrival by the doctors. Cops have been unable to identify him as he was not carrying any form of identification on him.
Siddharth, a student residing in Malad, has been booked under Section 304 (A) of the Indian Penal Code. He will be presented in front of the court today.
Meanwhile, Bangur Nagar police have impounded the vehicle and RTO officials have been asked to check if the accident could have been a result of a mechanical failure with the car.
The accused’s lawyer, however, told a leading daily that his client was not at fault since the pedestrian jumped the divider and landed in front of his car.
The photographs of the deceased are being circulated across police stations in a bid to identify him and notify his next of kin.
