Teenager who died in car crash in lift shaft booked for rash driving
The Nagpada police have booked the 14-year-old boy – who crashed through the second floor car lift in his building while reversing a Toyota Etios at high speed, killing himself and his family driver on Wednesday morning – for rash driving and causing death due to negligence.
Teenager Hafeez Patel, who lived in 22-storied Iqbal Heights at Mumbai Central, was also booked for driving without a licence and underage driving, while the deceased driver, who was seated next to the boy when the accident took place, was booked for allowing a minor to drive.
According to Nagpada Police, the CCTV camera footage confirmed the boy was at the wheel, and is seen driving out of the parking lot, with the driver in the adjoining seat.
The police say that the teen reversed the car till the lift door, and inadvertently pressed the accelerator instead of the brakes, causing the car to go through the lift doors.
The impact of the collision was so grave that the vehicle smashed through the door and crashed around 35 feet from the second floor.
