The youth and his friend were sitting on rocks around 100 to 150 feet away from the seashore at Bandstand when a large wave caught them off guard and carried them to the sea

A youth drowned off the coast of Mumbai near Bandra Bandstand on Wednesday afternoon after being swept by a wave during high tide.

According to officials, a man and a woman, both in their twenties, were sitting on the rocks around 100 to 150 feet away from the seashore at Bandstand near Bandra fort yesterday.

Around noon, a large wave caught them off guard and carried them to the sea.

While local fishermen and the police managed to rescue the woman before the fire brigade arrived on the spot, they couldn’t locate her friend.

The woman, identified as Priti Gupta, was immediately rushed to nearby Bhabha Hospital, where doctors put her in the intensive care unit.

The fire brigade officials continued the search, but with little luck. Later, around 2 pm, Navy divers and Coast Guard personnel were also pressed into service.

Around 5 pm, the youth’s body washed ashore. It was taken to Bhabha hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

The boy was identified as Ram Gupta and his body was handed over to the family after post-mortem. Meanwhile, Bandra police filed an accidental death report in the case.

According to officials, warning signs have been put on shore to inform people about the rocky sea. However, the duo ignored the warnings and ventured to the dangerous spot.
