FIR against owner of Status restaurant in Mahim for stealing electricity, BEST seeks Rs 5 crore penalty
An FIR has been registered against the owner of Status restaurant in Mahim after the BEST filed a complaint over alleged power theft and sought almost Rs 5 crore as penalty from the establishment.
According to a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) official, the undertaking registered an FIR with Mahim police on Thursday.
The owner of Status Gourmet restaurant, located opposite Hinduja hospital on Savarkar road in Mahim, was subsequently booked under relevant provisions of the Electricity Act.
“Acting on a tip-off, our team raided the two-storey restaurant, which also has two banquet halls. We found that a cable for power supply was connected illegally through a changeover switch arrangement,” an official told news agency PTI.
The official further stated that the service cabin or power source was hidden and a cable was being used illegally for stealing electricity for last several years.
A provisional claim of Rs 4.85 crore has been slapped on the restaurant owner as the BEST suspects that the theft was going on for last 10 years, he said, adding that the restaurant’s power supply has been disconnected in the interim.
Meanwhile, the BEST has not ruled out the possibility of their official’s involvement in the case.
