JJ hospital doctors threaten to go on strike after department head slaps student
Resident doctors at JJ Hospital have threatened to go on strike after a senior doctor allegedly slapped a student in public view on Thursday.
The female student was allegedly slapped by the college’s head of gynaecology department, Dr Rekha Daver.
After the incident, the student filed a complaint with Dean Dr T P Lahane, accusing the faculty member of assault and verbal abuse. In the her complaint, the student mentioned that she was slapped inside a ward.
Following which, Dr Lahane wrote to the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) to form a committee and investigate the matter.
Dr Sagar Mundada, President of Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) told a leading daily that the investigation will be complete in eight days, during which doctors in Dr. Rekha’s unit will be marked absent. The reason for marking the students absent was the lack of a conducive work environment.
Meanwhile, the accused, Dr Daver, maintains that she was trying to ‘discipline’ the careless student who made a tribal woman go from ward to ward for the treatment of her child. The child reportedly had a hole in the heart. She also said that doctors need to be extra careful in such cases.
Once the investigation is complete, authorities will take a call on whether the doctor will face any action.
