Mulund MLA Tara Singh gets extortion letter demanding Rs 1 crore, FIR registered
Antop Hill Police have registered an FIR against an unidentified person, who demanded Rs 1 crore extortion from Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Sardar Tara Singh.
The four-time MLA from Mulund also has an office in Antop Hill, where two handwritten letters were delivered this month. In the letters, the accused gave Singh a death threat, should he fail to deliver the requisite amount on time.
On Tuesday, a female staffer found the letter on the office floor. Upon reading it, she immediately informed Singh, who at the time was not in Mumbai.
After arriving in the city on Wednesday, the MLA filed a complaint with Antop Hill Police station.
The culprit had asked the MLA to drop the money at a particular spot near Kabutar Khana in Dadar on Wednesday. Armed with the location of the drop, Crime Branch laid a trap. But, no one turned up to collect the money.
Following which, an FIR under section 384 (extortion) was registered against the unknown culprit.
According to reports, the first extortion letter was ignored by the staffers as they thought someone was playing the prank. However, in the second letter, the accused also addressed the woman employee who had not handed the first letter to Singh.
Additionally, the extortionist referred to Singh as ‘Corporator’, despite the fact that he has not been one since 1999.
Based on the available information, police suspect that the extortion attempt is an inside job.
They are currently taking the statements of all the staffers and monitoring the CCTV footage to find the person responsible for crime.
