Soon city streets will be named after slum kids
You may have heard of streets named after freedom fighters, politicians, and other prominent personalities. However, have you ever seen or heard of any street named after a street urchin?
Well, now, in a first of its kind, city streets will be named after kids living in Mumbai’s slums.
This is being done in a bid to promote education amongst the kids belonging to the lower strata of the society, and the move has been initiated by an NGO Door Step School.
According to the organisation, the societies that these children come from give a lot of importance to respect, identity and power. Keeping this in mind, the NGO has decided to name the streets after the highest achieving child in that particular area.
The organisation believes that this will help motivate children and their families towards adopting academic means of earning a livelihood.
As naming a street after the child is a mark of appreciation and regard, more and more children and their families will be inspired towards doing well academically.
The criteria for choosing these children will be ‘finding the best’ student on that particular street and this will be done by a council of school teachers.
The activity was recently carried out in Cuffe Parade at the Baba Saheb Ambedkar Nagar Chowk where corporator Anita Ramesh Yadav was present, and in Hiranandani Akruti Chawl Govandi, where actor Karan Wahi was present to support the initiative.
The next site was Maharashtra Nagar Rickshaw Stand Chawl in Mankhurd.
