Korean national held while trying to smuggle gold worth Rs 4 crore at Mumbai airport
The Air Intelligence Unit of the Mumbai Customs on Monday arrested a South Korean national for allegedly smuggling 15 kilograms of gold worth Rs 4.15 crore. He arrived in Mumbai from Hong Kong by Cathay Pacific Airlines.
“We have seized 15 kg of gold from a South Korean passenger, who arrived from Hong Kong at the Mumbai International airport,” a customs official told PTI.
The official said a personal search of the passenger Kim Youngjin resulted in the discovery of gold.
The South Korean national had smuggled the gold in pockets of a specially stitched white-coloured cloth jacket. The jacket had 18 pockets, the official said, adding 15 gold bars each weighing one kilogram were found inside the apparel.
The accused, in his recorded statement, has admitted to the crime.
Further investigation into the case is underway.
